Respectful

At Horfield Welly we believe being respectful is important as it will help children develop positive relationships with others throughout their lives. We encourage children to respect others and the pre-school environment.

When a child begins their time with us they may only just be starting to develop an awareness of what it means to be respectful. They may require a little bit of support with sharing and turn taking and also need reminding about how to treat objects and people with respect e.g. using manners and not breaking books and toys etc.

As they develop and grow these attributes will begin to become second nature to the child and they will not require so much support from the adults around them. Through resources and activities children will learn about the similarities and differences between themselves and others within the pre-school and wider community.

Some examples of how we develop these skills are:

  • Sharing and turn taking games

  • Making and following rules.

  • Singing rhymes and songs that encourage manners and kind behaviour.

  • Modelling respectful behaviour to the children during our interactions.

  • Providing stories and resources that depict diversity.

  • Celebrating cultural events that are important to the families in our setting and the wider community
