At Welly Pre-school we recognise that parents and carers are the first and most important educators of their children, we see ourselves as partners with you in providing care and education for your child and aim to support our Welly families as much as possible. We operate an open door policy and strive to ensure that parents and carers feel welcome to speak to staff at any time.
When your child starts with us they will be allocated a key person who will get to know them and support them in their development and learning. Before your child starts, you will be invited to visit the Pre-school to meet your child’s key worker and the rest of the staff. This is an opportunity for you to ask any questions and share with us any concerns or needs for your child. We also arrange for your key person to visit you and your child at home in your own environment.
We want your child to feel happy and safe with us so your child’s key person will work with you to decide how best your child will settle in. We would like you to be available to stay for the first session at least, if required.
The key person will keep an electronic learning diary for each child, we use software called Tapestry to keep a record of your child's progress and achievements in key areas and include observations and photographs which will be available online for parents/carers to view at any time. Tapestry allows you to view your child’s individual Next Steps and shows particular targets in the main areas of learning that your child is working towards. We encourage parents and carers to add observations and achievements from home too.
Each day the children will take part in a short, adult led activity with their key person and the rest of their group, this is followed by free play and snack time. We provide a wide variety of resources and open-ended activities for the children to explore during free play and they are able to move freely between our indoor and outdoor area. Once free play is finished the children help to tidy up before taking part in a big group time activity all together, this could be singing, music & movement or games, children sit with their key person and group for lunch and then we end the session with a story.
Due to Covid-19 we are currently unable to facilitate visits to the Pre-school. We have recorded some videos to show you the kind of things you can expect to see during a typical session.

This entitlement can be claimed following your child’s 3rd birthday and not before the start of the next entitlement period which commence at the start of Term 1, Term 3 or Term 5. You don’t have to apply for the universal 15 hours free childcare funding yourself, we will apply on your behalf. For more information about fees for 2 year olds before they are eligible for Universal FEEE funding please contact us.
Some families of 2 year-olds who receive certain benefits might be eligible for 15 hours FEEE funding, for more information click here. Families will need to apply directly to the local authority, you can apply online here.
Welly is managed by a parent/carer committee who are elected by the parents/carers at the Annual General Meeting. This is a great way for you to be a positive part of your child’s pre-school life and there are roles to suit different strengths from the Chair and Treasurer to the fundraising and social team.
As a charity, every penny counts, and we fundraise to be able to afford resources and equipment that will benefit now and in the future. We also have roles for fundraising at the Toddler Group.
Some key areas the committee cover are:
Managing the setting’s finances, employing and managing the staff members
Making sure policies and procedures are in place to continue to provide our high quality setting
Managing the parent helpers rota
All the roles are really rewarding, and we would love for you to be on board; you will certainly get out what you put in.
Our parents and carers agree to each help out for one morning per half-term for which we are very grateful, and it also enables us to run as a charity with full-time places for pre-schoolers completely covered by the government grant.
As a charity, Welly Pre-school is always looking for ways to boost our funds so we can provide even more brilliant enrichment activities for your lovely children.
